The Nansemond-Suffolk Academy boys’ basketball team defeated Warwick High School Saturday 59-51.

The Saints took on Warwick High School Saturday afternoon at home and got a win. The game snapped a three-game losing streak for the Saints, and it put them at 2-3 on the season.

After the first quarter, the Saints led 8-7. In the second quarter, the Saints started to heat up, with 14 points in the second period. Spencer Salmon led the charge, putting up five points in that quarter. NSA did a good job defensively, holding Warwick again to a 7-point quarter.

At halftime, NSA was up 22-14. Throughout the game, NSA showed a willingness to be able to improve each quarter. They went from increasing their scoring output in the first and second quarter to carrying the momentum into the third quarter as well. NSA put up 21 points in the third quarter behind an eight-point performance by Kemauri Spencer.

Warwick showed spunk in the fourth quarter. After going into the fourth quarter down 43-25, they took advantage of a relaxed NSA team and poured in 26 points, the most scored in a quarter by either team.

Despite Warwick’s strong effort to come back, NSA was able to hold them off for an eight-point victory. Kemauri Spencer led the way for NSA with 14 points and six rebounds. D.J. White added nine points and 12 rebounds. George Pettaway and Allen Strothers added nine and eight points, respectively.

“It felt good to bounce back in front of our fans against a solid team,” Salmon said.

“Our morale is good, and we are confident about where we stand with our play,” Saints coach Lamont Strothers said about his team’s play.

Coming up for the Saints is the NSA holiday tournament they will host this weekend. It will feature four teams with games on Friday and Saturday. The Saints do not play again until the tournament, so Strothers will emphasize skill work throughout the week for the team so that they stay sharp.

“Skill work is important to me,” Strothers said. “It keeps from having to run a lot of sets or relying on sets to score. Sometimes you have to able to improvise and go get a bucket.”

NSA will take on Summit Christian Academy at 7 p.m. Friday in their first game of the Holiday Classic.

“I’ve watched Summit, and they will be scrappy,” Strothers said. “They will show up with a lot of energy. We will focus on our energy this week. We have to match their energy.”
