Nansemond River High School’s Henry Moreno was selected to the 757 All-Star football game to be played on Dec. 17.

With football season coming to an end statewide for seniors, some of them will have the chance to step on the gridiron for one last time. On Dec. 17, at Powhatan Field at Old Dominion University, the seniors from Hampton Roads will participate in an All-Star football game.

The game will feature two teams — the Peninsula team and the Southside team. It is a showcase that will represent the best senior talent in the Tidewater area. Nansemond River linebacker Henry Moreno was selected to the Southside team and will be the only representative from Suffolk featured in the game.

“It’s truly a blessing,” Moreno said. “Suffolk has a crazy amount of athletes, yet the city still seems to be slept on. So I’m going to go out there and play hard not only for my school and family but for the whole city of Suffolk. I want to thank my family, friends and teammates. Without their support, I wouldn’t have had the drive to get me to the level I play at.”

Moreno finished his senior season with the Warriors as a first-team All-Conference linebacker. He had 87 tackles with 40 assisted. During his high school career, he has been a three-time All-Conference member. He was a part of a Nansemond River team that had back-to-back winning seasons for the first time in school history. They finished with a record of 6-5.

Outside of a couple of plays Moreno wishes he made this year, his senior year was everything he thought it’d be.

“It was a great senior year, and I wouldn’t have traded any one of my teammates for anybody,” he said.

Moreno is driven by his family and friends. He lost a best friend a couple of years ago and then lost his great-grandmother a few months after. From then on, he made it a point to compete as hard as he could. He also plays to make a name for himself so that his family members that aren’t able to see him play know he is doing well.

The game will be at 1 p.m. Dec. 17. Some of the game’s sponsors include Jersey Mike’s Subs, Buffalo Bills quarterback E.J Manuel and Under Armour. Tickets will be $10 for general admission and $7 for students.

“It’s an honor to be out there,” He said. “Some of those guys are going to big time schools and to be able to play a game with those guys is pretty cool.”
