Two dead after bypass crash

UPDATED Saturday 10 p.m.: Robert Mitchell died Saturday evening. The investigation remains ongoing.
UPDATED Saturday 9:30 a.m.: The passenger in Friday’s crash has died, according to a city press release.
The woman has been identified as Jean M. Mitchell, 77, of Ivor. Her husband, Robert A. Mitchell, 81, remains hospitalized in serious condition. They had been traveling in a Toyota passenger vehicle.
The driver of the tractor-trailer was not injured, according to the press release.
The investigation remains ongoing.
Earlier: One patient was airlifted to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital Friday evening after a crash on the Route 58 bypass.
The accident happened at 5:53 p.m. on Route 58 westbound just before the Wilroy Road exit, according to a city press release. It involved a tractor-trailer and a passenger vehicle.
Suffolk Fire and Rescue personnel had to extricate the driver and passenger in the passenger vehicle, and one of them was taken by Nightingale to Norfolk for treatment of serious injuries, according to the release.
A detour was set up for most of the evening, as the road remained closed for several hours for investigation and cleanup.
