Tyquan Holloman earned Duke Automotive-Suffolk News-Herald Player of the Week honors after throwing for 138 yards and rushing for 52 yards in last weekend’s win against Tabb High School.

Holloman is a sophomore and the quarterback of the Lakeland High School football team. He is currently the man under center for a Lakeland team enjoying its best football season to date. This is Holloman’s second year as a starter, and he has shown significant progress from his first to his second.

Last year, Holloman and the team had a 3-9 record. But he learned from mistakes, worked hard in the offseason and now has helped his team make it to its first regional championship ever.

The sophomore has put on performances this year that show his true potential at the position and as an athlete. In a week during the beginning of the season, where Lakeland played two teams in four days, Holloman put on some of his best performances. Against Great Bridge High School on Sept. 26, he completed 15 of his 20 passes for 255 yards and two touchdowns. In that same game, he rushed for 46 yards and caught an interception on defense. On Sept. 30, he completed 10 passes for 124 yards.

His teammates see how talented he is and what he does for the team. They don’t mind following his lead, regardless of his underclassman status.

“Tyquan is a great leader in every way,” the Cavs’ Nashun Overton said. “Whether it’s pushing the guys to do one more sprint, finish one more rep or even tighten their grades up, he leads by example. Playing alongside of him is truly an honor.”

Holloman prides himself on keeping his team close, creating that family environment. He keeps the team goal consistent.

“We have to come out and play our game,” Holloman said. “We have to stick together as a family and listen to our coaches.”

This postseason the Lakeland offense has been averaging more than 40 points per game. While the Cavs running game is a big reason for that, Holloman has been making good decisions with the ball.

“Tyquan has been stepping up huge for us this year,” Cavs coach Kevin Knight said. “He was just coming into high school last year becoming the starting quarterback. That was a learning experience for him. When he is comfortable and making the right decisions, I don’t think no one can stop him.”

Holloman is a dual threat quarterback with a lot of promise if he continues to grow over his junior and senior seasons. He was named a second team all-conference quarterback this year, and Knight along with the Cavs players believe that it is only the beginning for the sophomore.

“He is one of the best athletes out there when he is on the field,” Knight said. “He can throw a good ball and run if you need him to. He can even play defense. The future is bright for such a young man.”
