Selfies with the kettles

It’s that time of the year when you’ll hear bells ringing and see red kettles outside of businesses for The Salvation Army’s biggest fundraiser of the year.
This year, The Salvation Army Hampton Roads Area Command is kicking off a new social media campaign to raise awareness of the Red Kettle campaign this holiday season. It’s called #RedKettleReason757.
The idea is that when you come across a red kettle, you should donate, snap a selfie, and post it social media using #RedKettleReason757 or #RKR757.
The Salvation Army will highlight the top photo with the most likes each week, which will then be entered for a grand prize. The campaign runs until Dec. 24.
The Red Kettle Selfie campaign coincides with the 2016 Angel Tree program.
The Angel Tree campaign provides children in need with clothing and other apparel for Christmas. Kettle donations assist local families at the holidays, as well as all year long.
Angel Tree is an opportunity for the public to “adopt an angel” for Christmas. Individuals should purchase at least two clothing items for their “angel” and return them unwrapped to the location where they picked up the tag by Dec. 6. Christmas assistance distribution begins Dec. 16.
Each year in Hampton Roads, The Salvation Army displays more than 100 kettles across the region to raise funds to support ongoing work.
When a volunteer rings a bell, 83 cents of each dollar dropped in a kettle is used to support Salvation Army programs and services in the Hampton Roads community. An Online Red Kettle is also available for donations.
