Employees of Rose & Womble New Homes, with the support of the Rose & Womble Foundation, spent much of Thursday delivering turkeys and other Thanksgiving goodies to hundreds of families around Hampton Roads.
The “2016 Turkey Brigade” marked the 24th year the company and its charitable foundation have provided the holiday meals to those in need.
Employees started packing bags and loading vehicles at 7 a.m. on Thursday at the Harbour View office. Each delivery included a turkey, six cans of vegetables, stuffing, cranberry sauce, gravy, apples, five pounds of potatoes, a package of dinner rolls and an aluminum baking pan in a reusable blue grocery bag.
Rose & Womble New Homes packed 350 baskets, and the Rose & Womble Foundation as a whole contributed 1,350 baskets to the effort. Employees also raised funds for another 50 baskets that are going out to a community in Raleigh, N.C.
A list of homes to be included in the distribution was developed from different churches, nonprofits, housing organizations and social services agencies.
The 150 residents of the Senior Cogix Center in Norfolk received 50 baskets with all the trimmings for Thanksgiving dinner. The company also provided baskets for the Chaplain’s Offices of both the U.S. Marine Corps and the U.S. Navy for those in need.
The Deltaville Market and SuperValu Foods were among the major contributors Turkey Brigade this year, according to company officials, and SuperValu employees drove an hour and a half to participate in the event.
