Two regional radio stations return with their annual food drive next weekend.

Stations WAFX and WNOR will host the 20th annual Mayflower Marathon Food Drive on Nov. 18-20.

This also marks the second year Suffolk will serve as one of the drive’s locations. The First Team Subaru Kia, located at 4834B Bridge Road, will be the host site.

Sonja Morrell, marketing director for WAFX and WNOR, helped establish the Suffolk location for the drive.

“It was sort of my baby,” she said.

Morrell said the dealership was completely on board with the initiative.

“They are very community-minded out there,” she said. “They didn’t even give it a second thought.”

In the past, local participants would have to commute to either Pembroke Mall in Virginia Beach or the Coliseum Marketplace in Hampton to donate.

“The radio stations wanted to make it easier to donate,” Morrell said.

Last year, the three locations raised more than 621,550 meals.

She said donations have ranged from just a few dollars to several canned goods and turkeys.

“There is no donation that’s too small,” Morrell said.

All food and monetary donations for the Virginia Beach and Suffolk sites will go to the Food Bank of Southeastern Virginia and Eastern Shore. Donations from the Hampton location will go toward the Virginia Peninsula Foodbank.

The radio station hopes to keep the drive going due to the profound impact it has had on the Hampton Roads area.

“Our motto for the Mayflower Marathon is Every Can Counts and Every Dollar Makes a Difference,” Mike Beck, brand manager for WAFX and WNOR, stated in a press release. “Our listeners and clients are very generous with their contribution of food, money, materials and time because they see the direct impact on the lives of families right here in Hampton Roads. We are proud supporters of the food banks.”

The event will run from 5:30 a.m. on Nov. 18 to 3 p.m. on Nov. 20.
