The Warriors had four players qualify for the regional tournament last week, but despite substantial efforts from each golfer, the Warriors didn’t have anyone qualify for states. The regional tournament was held Monday and Tuesday afternoon at Newport News Golf Course at Deer Run.

Isiah Marquez shot a score of 86 and 84, and Jack Wolfe shot a score of 91 and 108. Zach Martin shot 90 and 82, while Jackson Lyons shot 95 and 94.

“It was a pretty good experience for the kids,” coach Brandon Frye said. “Three of the players will be back next year, so it was a good experience for them.”

“I think we did OK, but we all feel we could have played better,” Wolfe said. “The experience was great, and it was exciting being around so many great golfers.”

Overall, the season was deemed successful, as each player’s scores from previous years improved. Martin, who is a senior, shot the best round of his career in the regional tournament.

“A lot of the kids were shooting their best scores during and towards the end of the season,” Frye said. “Everyone improved as the season went on, so I take that as a success.”

Next year, Nansemond River will be returning eight players. They want to continue to improve on the season they had this year. The players were disappointed the whole team was unable to make the regional tournament, as the Warriors placed third in the conference tournament and only the top two teams qualify.

Last year was Frye’s first year as the Warriors head golf coach, and he is proud of the growth he has seen from all of his players on and off the course from last year to this year. For next year, look for the Warriors golf team to be even better with the experience they gained this year.

“I enjoyed this season,” the Warriors’ No. 1 player, Marquez, said. “I’m looking forward to next year and how we will grow and get better.”
