Oasis sets soup challenge

Sometimes a bowl of soup is the only thing that stands between health and hunger.
To this end, Oasis Social Ministry ensures a hot and healthy breakfast and lunch is served 365 days a year, starting years ago with a simple small bowl of soup and a peanut-butter sandwich.
Those roots that have inspired a fundraising event, the Oasis Social Ministry Soup Cook-Off and Auction, which will be held at 5 p.m. Monday at Church of the Resurrection, 3501 Cedar Lane in Portsmouth.
Local restaurants — including The Dancing Tomato, Atlantic Shores, Mario’s, FM, and Mannino’s — and amateur cooks have been invited to make their best soups. Guests will vote for their favorites and the winner will leave with Oasis’ Golden Ladle Award.
The event will include an auction and musical entertainment, as well.
All funds raised will go directly to Oasis to fund its programs and services.
Sponsors include Joe Chop, TowneBank, Brickcraft Masonry Inc., Obici House, Slait Consulting, Associated Contracting Services, Ohef Sholom Temple Sisterhood, Dane E. Griffin Architect, K Plus Caulking, Pam and Russell Kirk and Carolyn and E.J. Burbage.
Oasis celebrates its 47th anniversary this year. The nonprofit organization was created by five local Catholic parishes and has evolved into an ecumenical multi-serving agency committed to helping individuals and families meet their basic needs and to support their efforts of self-reliance and independence.
Oasis’ programs include a soup kitchen, food pantry and clothes closet.
Tickets, $25 each, are available at Oasis or online at www.oasissocialministry.org/events.
