Webb attends University of South Carolina Upstate

Trish Webb of Suffolk is attending the University of South Carolina Upstate for the fall semester of 2016.

 

Three from Suffolk march with Royal Dukes

Three students from Suffolk are marching with James Madison University’s nationally recognized marching band, the Marching Royal Dukes this season. The band has 440 members.

On tap for this season are performances at local high schools, a trip with the football team to Chapel Hill, a featured exhibition at the USBands National Championships in Allentown, Pa., and a joint performance with the Marching Virginians at the annual Virginia Music Educators Association State Conference at The Homestead Resort in November.

Students from Suffolk who are part of the JMU Royal Dukes are:

  • Travis Low, a fourth-year student who is in the baritone section;
  • Spencer Jefferson, a fourth-year student who is in the saxophone section;
  • And Stuart Brazil, a fourth-year student who is in the trombone section.

 

Chowan inducts Honors College students

Three students from Suffolk were formally inducted into the newest class of Honors College students at Chowan University on Sept. 18.

Parents and university faculty and staff gathered in Vaughan Auditorium to celebrate the achievement of 58 students. Dr. Brenda Tinkham, Associate Provost for External Relations, served as the keynote speaker.

Chowan University’s Honors College is a curriculum designed for talented and extremely motivated students who want to gain the most from their college experience.

Honors courses are specially designed to develop students’ writing and discussion skills and their ability to think critically beyond the norm. Honors College students have the opportunity to attend cultural events, take field trips and build social responsibility through community service.

The Honors College Committee will normally consider for acceptance into the program any freshman who enters college with at least a 3.25 high school grade point average and an SAT score of 1100 or higher.

Transfer students and Chowan rising sophomores must have earned at least a 3.50 GPA and a B in English composition.

Suffolk students inducted into the class were as follows:

  • Naiyhani Etheridge, freshman, graphic design;
  • Rebecca Gayheart, sophomore, psychology;
  • And Maria Hurtado, freshman, psychology.
