A Drewryville woman has been arrested on a charge of first-degree murder in the death of a Suffolk woman in March.

Keshia Freeman, 36, is also charged with abuse and neglect of an incapacitated adult resulting in death, according to a news release from the Southampton County Sheriff’s Office.

Southampton County deputies and emergency medical services responded to a Drewryville home on March 2 for a report of an autistic child that was unresponsive, according to the press release.

The victim was pronounced dead by Capron Rescue about 30 minutes after the initial call. The victim was actually found to be a woman, Shaquille Hall, 23, and it was found she suffered from cerebral palsy, not autism.

The medical examiner listed Hall’s death as a homicide and determined the cause of death was blunt force trauma to the abdomen, according to the press release. Contributing causes were listed as an overdose of diphenhydramine — an antihistamine — as well as dehydration, starvation and battery.

The sheriff’s office investigation revealed that Hall was in the care of her Medicaid-provided aide at the time of her death, and she had not been in the care of her family for at least five weeks prior to her death.

Freeman is scheduled to appear for arraignment in Southampton County Circuit Court on Nov. 3. Bond was denied.
