Garden forum set

Autumn is officially here, and with it comes new opportunities in the garden and in the kitchen.

The Suffolk Partnership will hold its fourth garden forum Saturday at Johnson’s Gardens, 3201 Holland Road, to expose people to some of those opportunities.

It should be a pleasant day after a long week of rain, said Shelley Barlow, garden coordinator for the Suffolk Partnership and also a Chuckatuck-area farmer.

“I think people will be glad to get out of the house and go do something,” Barlow said.

The Partnership held two garden forums — one in spring and one in fall — last year and held a spring one earlier this year, Barlow said. The events have received good response from area residents, some of whom have made sure to attend each one.

“The main thing we’re focusing on is fall gardens,” Barlow said of this Saturday’s presentations. “It’s not too late to put some things in. We have a lot of winter-hardy vegetables that you can put in now.”

Presentations every hour will highlight the event.

At 9 a.m., Mary Ellen Mathews will discuss strategies to include children and teens in the family garden.

At 10 a.m., Dedra Blount will hold a cooking demonstration.

And at 11 a.m., a panel discussion with some Master Gardeners and expert gardeners will focus on building a home garden.

Throughout the entire event, which runs from 9 a.m. to noon, there will be door prizes as well as children’s activities, which will be run by The Planning Council, which partners with the Partnership on three preschool gardens, Barlow said.

“It’s good to have community partners,” she said.

The event is free, but registration is requested to ensure enough supplies are available. Register at www.suffolkpartnership.com.
