To the editor:

Bonnie and I went to buy the Virginia state flag to mount on our house when we moved here from California in 2013.

The flag has a mean, sexist image of a half-naked Amazon woman slaying a fallen king. The Latin motto under the image says, “Sic Semper Tyrannis” which I think means “So Always With Tyrants.”

It looks like many other states have outdated flags, too.

This flag:

• Does nothing for attracting business or tourism;
• Depicts bullying;
• Has a meaningless motto;
• Lacks any interest and might be insulting to some;
• Says nothing about Virginia;
• Has image we can’t show the grandchildren

It’s time for a change! What do you think of this idea?
