Nansemond River High School’s boys’ volleyball team lost in three close sets to Hickory High School on Thursday.

Despite the loss, coach Sarah Hutzler was satisfied with her team’s effort. In the future, she hopes her team can find ways to win close games.

“We played a very good game,” Hutzler said. “We were down a couple of people due to injury, but we still managed to compete hard.”

Nandemond River knows there is work to do if they want to win close games. Remaining calm in close games is one big part, because each play is critical. Keeping the pace steady and staying focused will assist in the future.

“We want to work on our serving and power,” Hutzler said. “If we work on those things and improve our communication, we will be all right.”

Hutzler is in her first year with the boys’ volleyball team. Her background is in soccer.

“At first, I did not know what I was getting myself into,” Hutzler said. “I am getting better every day, and I am seeing this team improve every day, as well.”

Even though she is new, the players trust her as a coach and like how she has adapted to the sport so far. She keeps her game planning instinct-based, a style the Warriors’ players prefer.

“She is definitely adapting well to volleyball,” senior Jacob Bordeaux said. “She keeps our game plans simple. We trust her and the advice she gives us.”

The Warriors pride themselves on team chemistry and their desire to play to the best of their abilities. Bordeaux is expected to be a consistent contributor and a leader for the team. Hutzler is also expecting good production out of senior Matthew Waterman.

“My coach has looked to me as a leader on this team,” Bordeaux said. “I see it as my job to encourage my team when we are down. I make it my duty to make sure our heads are in the game and that we are focused.

Nansemond River will face Indian River away at 7 p.m. on Sept. 8.
