Worker injured in fire

A worker was injured during a gas line fire on Sunday afternoon in the 6700 block of Burbage Lake Circle.

Suffolk Fire & Rescue crews responded to a call at 3:22 p.m. and found a fire coming from a hole in a 4-inch natural gas line, according to a city press release. A contractor had been digging at the site.

Two homes and five residents were temporarily evacuated, and a male worker was taken by ground ambulance to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital for treatment of injuries not considered life-threatening, according to the release.

The fire was marked under control at 5:27 p.m., after a crew from Columbia Gas was able to shut the gas line down. Fire crews were staged at the scene throughout the incident to ensure the fire did not spread.

There were no injuries to residents or firefighters, according to the press release. The cause of the fire is undetermined.
