Wendy Spain used to tell folks that her art shop — Plum Crazy — was Bridge Road’s signature purple house.

But last week, the shop and its smorgasbord of handcrafted paintings, drawings, jewelry, ornaments and lotions moved into the upscale Shoppes on the Village Green at Governors Pointe.

While it no longer has the quirky purple exterior, Plum Crazy still has a homey feel. There is an antique sofa in front of the fireplace, a chalkboard, a long dining room table where artists work during classes. A glass-working studio is tucked into one corner, although all firing of projects is done at an off-site kiln, Spain said.

At any one time, the works of roughly 80 Virginia and North Carolina artists are on display and for sale by consignment, Spain said.

“For artists who want to sell their work, this is an alternative to attending craft shows and manning tents all weekend,” Spain said. If customers find something at her shop they want in a specific color, Spain works with the artist to make it happen.

In her new space, Spain plans to increase the number of paint and glass-fusion classes at Plum Crazy.

“People really seem to enjoy coming to parties and making things for their homes or yards,” Spain said.

Currently, Plum Crazy has evening painting or glass-fusing classes roughly every two weeks; once confirmed, class offerings are sent out via email or posted on Plum Crazy’s Facebook page.

Spain also takes the art classes on the road, with monthly visits to the Bier Garden in Portsmouth. It’s not unusual for 30 people to attend, she said.

She also plans to begin booking more private paint parties for adults and children and Pinterest parties — parties based on do-it-yourself ideas found on Pinterest.

“The classes and the business feed off one another,” said Spain. “The more people come in to do a class, the more people will see the artists’ works up here for sale in the shop.”

The increasingly popular paint nights give people fun, affordable evenings out to stretch their creativity, Spain said.

With encouragement from Alison Dodson Anderson, owner of A. Dodson’s, Spain — a long-time Suffolk photographer — opened her own business in 2014. Business has grown steadily since the first year.

“Everything here is a little different,” Spain said. “It’s special, one-of-a-kind pieces. That‘s what I love about it here.”
