Percussion, dance and flag groups will battle it out during the first “Peanut City” Drumline, Dance and Flag Showdown this Friday.

Hosted by Suffolk Parks and Recreation, the event will take place at King’s Fork High School, 351 Kings Fork Road. It will raise funds to support the Suffolk Youth Achievement Awards.

“We wanted to provide an opportunity for individuals to showcase their skills as it relates to music and dance,” said Lakita Watson, Suffolk Parks and Recreation director. “Music and dance are an important part of Parks and Recreation just like athletics and parks.”

Aside from King’s Fork High School, the other participating schools are Bethel High School of Hampton, Henrico High School of Richmond, Ballou Sr. High School of Washington, D.C., Kipp Pride High School of Gaston, N.C., North Brunswick High School of Leland, N.C., and Warren County High School of Warrenton, N.C.

In addition, special exhibition performances by the Virginia Union University “Mix Breed” drumline and Warren County High School “Innerg Dance Unit” will take place.

Watson said the event will include competition in all three areas — drumline, dance and flags — as well as a “Wreckin’ the Stands” dance battle, in the style of the reality television show “Bring It.”

First through third place awards will be given, as well as a “People’s Choice” award for the groups with the biggest crowd response.

Free gift card drawings will also take place during the event.

“There will be some individual dance-offs to allow the young people from the various groups to really showcase what they’ve been able to learn over the time they’ve been working with these bands,” Watson said.

“This is an opportunity to allow local and some out of state bands to come together to showcase their skills,” she added. “This is a very good, fun event where the entire family can truly enjoy some good music and good competition.”

The doors will open at 5 p.m. for Friday’s event, with showtime at 6 p.m. Tickets are $10 each.
