Sonja Horton, of Suffolk, earned an honorable mention, along with $500, styling tools and hair products, for her entry in Sport Clips Haircuts’ “The Look” competition in San Antonio, Texas, on Tuesday.
Horton was one of six stylists chosen from the 14,000 who work for Sports Clips locations across North America to participate in the competition, which was held during the company’s annual meeting.
The contestants recreated — on stage before a live audience of 2,700 company employees — the hairstyles they had submitted in advance, and they were judged by a team of industry professionals.
Horton’s creation was a military-style “high and tight,” with a hard part and a pompadour on top. She said it’s one of her favorite cuts and that it looks good “on anybody.”
Horton has been a licensed stylist for 24 years and followed in the footsteps of her mother.
The Look winner Sarah Cottrell created a ‘30s and ‘40s classic style with hard part. She was “going for the newer looks many men’s professional soccer players are sporting,” she said.
“Sport Clips is a terrific place to work and showcase your creative skills as a professional stylist,” said Senior Director of Career Opportunities Julie Vargas, also a licensed stylist with more than 25 years of experience.
“These contestants had the opportunity to show off their work in front of some of the industry’s most recognized and respected icons. And, they got to have fun while doing what they love — cutting and styling hair.”
