A dog was rescued from the waters of the Nansemond River Sunday afternoon after citizens noticed it trying to swim to shore and getting pulled out to the water by the tide.

Suffolk Fire & Rescue personnel and Animal Control rescued the dog with the assistance of a citizen in a kayak, according to a city press release.

Emergency Communications received the calls from the 100 block of Riverside Drive in the Bennett’s Creek Landing neighborhood at approximately 3:06 p.m.

Engine 5, Ladder 5 and Medic 5 responded to the scene and crews launched a Zodiac boat to try to coax the dog back to shore, according to the press release. Animal Control staff also waded into the water and were able to secure the dog with a harness and noose.

The older female Labrador mix, black in color, was safely brought to the shore at approximately 3:21 p.m. It is unknown how long the dog was actually in the water.

No neighbors recognized the dog, which was brought to a local vet for assessment and treatment. The dog will then be transported to Suffolk Animal Care.  If you have any information as to the dog’s owner, contact Animal Control at 514-7855.
