A Suffolk artist is featured in the latest edition of the internationally distributed “Pottery Making Illustrated” with her tutorial on how to handcraft an eight-sided casserole dish.
It’s not the first time Ann Ruel has been published for her work. She’s had about nine articles in various publications, including “Studio Ceramics.”
“I’ve always done artwork throughout my life,” she said.
Ruel started doing clay work about 10 years ago, since she took a class in a community college and got interested in it. She mostly enjoys working on a wheel but also does hand-building of pieces.
Much of Ruel’s work is decorated with wildlife, inspired by the sylvan environment in which she lives. She’s recently begun doing a lot of insects.
“Lately, the bees have taken on a life of their own,” she said.
Since moving to Suffolk about a year ago, she now has a studio with heat and air conditioning, which are a big plus, as well as a wheel and kiln. She has exhibited in numerous national shows and currently is featured in an online international show.
But since developing tendonitis, she hasn’t been able to work on her own pottery as much, so she teaches classes and workshops and writes articles.
“I do a lot of article ideas and send them in,” she said.
The eight-sided casserole dish evolved from a workshop she did, where she and her students perfected the technique. It uses an eight-sided paper plate as a template.
“It was a lot of fun,” she said.
