German discount grocer Lidl is looming on North Suffolk’s horizon.
The company has proposed building a 33,000-square-foot grocery store near the intersection of Harbour View Boulevard and Early Forte Way, according to city spokeswoman Diana Klink. The company recently paid $1.6 million for the lot in Harbour View, according to city land transactions.
The company has not provided the city with an anticipated construction schedule or opening date, Klink stated.
Lidl operates more than 10,000 stores in 26 European countries, according to the company’s website. Although the store does not have any stores open in the United States yet, plans are in the works to open stores around the country, according to a company spokesman.
Last month, the Chesapeake City Council approved a rezoning request to allow Lidl to build a 36,000-square-foot grocery store at 4033 Portsmouth Blvd.
In June 2015, Gov. Terry McAuliffe announced Lidl is investing $202 million in Virginia, including $77 million to build the company’s U.S. corporate headquarters in Arlington and $125 million on a regional headquarters and distribution center in Spotsylvania County, according to a press release from McAuliffe’s office.
Will Harward, spokesman for Lidl US, did not comment on a store coming to Suffolk.
“We are in the early stages of preparation to launch in the United States, and have not announced specific stores at this point,” he said via email. “I can confirm, however, that we are actively pursuing sites in the region … and plan to have stores open in the United States no later than 2018.”
