The main event of Winter Storm Jonas is over for Suffolk, but weather will continue to be cold, windy and wet for Saturday and Sunday.

“Your main action’s going to be today,” said Lyle Alexander, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Wakefield.

Precipitation began in Suffolk middle to late morning on Friday, and the snow fell fast and heavy at times. Sleet, rain and periods of no precipitation were also seen by the end of the day.

Alexander estimated Suffolk would receive one to two inches by the end of the day.

Rain on Friday evening was expected to continue all day Saturday. Snow or sleet could be seen again Saturday night or Sunday morning.

“And that will be it,” Alexander said, adding that winds will be up to 35 miles per hour until the storm is over.

A variety of cancellations have been announced due to the weather.

Local public and private schools, including Suffolk and Isle of Wight County schools, Nansemond-Suffolk Academy, Suffolk Christian Academy and Isle of Wight Academy, were all closed Friday.

Suffolk city offices also closed at 11 a.m. Friday.

The Whaleyville Community Center, East Suffolk Recreation Center, Suffolk Art Gallery and all Joint Use facilities, as well as Suffolk Public Libraries, closed at 11 a.m. Friday, and a determination about their Saturday schedule was still being made at press time. All indoor sports games are canceled both days.

The Suffolk Center for Cultural Arts has canceled all of its activities and performances for Saturday, Sunday and Monday, including performances of “The Marian Anderson Story.” Call 923-0003 ext. 3026 for more information.
