King’s Fork High School seniors Deshaun Wethington and Cullen Marshall were named to the 2015 Group 4A all-state second team.

Wethington was selected as both a running back and an offensive all-purpose player, and Marshall was selected as a defensive lineman.

Reflecting on Wethington’s honors, Bulldogs coach Joe Jones said he is “excited and happy for him.”

“Any time you make all-state, first or second team, it’s a great honor,” the coach said.

Wethington made the all-state first team in 2014, but his production was somewhat limited this year as he missed two games during the regular season — one due to injury, another due to suspension — and in the postseason, the Bulldogs failed to reach the regional semifinals for the first time since 2012.

“I don’t know if missing the two games hurt him with rushing numbers,” Jones said. “Obviously, I feel he’s first-team all-state material.”

Despite the missed playing time, Wethington still accounted for 1,716 yards and 25 touchdowns.

As a four-year starter, he finished his high school career having rushed for 5,922 yards and 73 touchdowns. His regular-season career total of a little under 5,000 rushing yards puts him behind only Salem High School’s Kevin Whaley on the all-time list for South Hampton Roads.

Accounting for the offensive all-purpose honor, Wethington served, at times, as a quarterback for the Bulldogs, even once completing a 29-yard pass. He also had four catches for 37 yards as a receiver.

Marshall had a breakout season for King’s Fork, resulting in the first all-state recognition of his high school career.

“Very happy for Cullen, “Jones said. “Well-deserved, he had a good year and worked hard.”

As a key force on the Bulldogs’ defensive line, Marshall finished the season with 57 total tackles, including 13 tackles for loss and three sacks. He also forced three fumbles, recovered two and had one pass breakup.

While Wethington is committed to play for Towson University, Marshall is still deciding.

“Norfolk State (University) has shown a lot of interest,” Jones said after also noting Marshall will be visiting Virginia State University this weekend. “I think he has a great, great upside in football.”
