A chainsaw-carved dragon is decorated for Christmas along Progress Road.

Teeth bared and red tongue spitting, Santa Dragon is popping out of the woods in Wilroy Industrial Park.

The creature — with big green eyes and sporting a Santa hat and red garland necklace — mysteriously appeared on Progress Road three or four years ago.

No one seems to remember exactly when or know exactly who turned the remnants of a tree downed in a nor’easter into primitive, chainsaw-carved artwork. The dragon is redecorated occasionally in appropriate holiday garb.

Nearby business employees said they don’t know the mysterious elf.

“We don’t have a clue who does it,” said a Holiday Ice Inc. employee, who declined to give her name. “We never see them.”

“I’ve definitely noticed it,” Jennifer Wrenn, customer service manager at Rinehart FoodServices Inc., said.

Dorsey Ficklin, manager of White Oak Equipment, said he has had a customer buy chains for a saw who claimed to be creator and caretaker of the dragon. But Ficklin said he did not know the customer’s name.
