To a child who may never have received a new toy or item of clothing, being set loose in a Walmart with $100 to spend may very well be the best Christmas ever.

Through the generosity of Suffolk law enforcement officers, businesses and individual citizens, about 25 children were able to do just that this Friday, when they participated in the annual “Shop with a Cop” held by the Fraternal Order of Police Lodge No. 41.

The children were able to choose gifts for themselves, their siblings and their parents under the watchful eye of several active and retired law enforcement officers, who helped them choose gifts and keep track of their budget.

Adults know Christmas isn’t about getting stuff, but it’s hard to explain that to a child. It’s probably safe to say the law enforcement officers who shopped with the children on Friday had as much fun as their young charges, because they experienced the true joy that comes with helping and giving at Christmastime and all year long.

It’s impossible to overstate what the experience might mean for these children. For some, it might mean considering a future career in law enforcement. For others, it might mean being encouraged to stay out of trouble. For still others, it might simply mean a merrier Christmas than they would have had otherwise.

“We’re here to help them, not hurt them,” said retired Suffolk Police detective Al Bremer. He noted the event will help the children to see law enforcement officers in a positive light.

This event is yet another piece to the puzzle of building a good relationship between law enforcement and the community. We applaud all of those involved for a job well done.
