Player of the Week nominees

Following are this week’s nominees for the Duke Automotive-Suffolk News-Herald Player of the Week:
- Aneka Yelverton, senior for Nansemond River High School basketball: She was outstanding, helping her team go 2-1 this week. In Thursday’s 81-48 win over visiting Indian River High School, she poured in 34 points and 11 steals. In Tuesday’s 79-24 home win over Hickory High School, she had 29 points and eight rebounds. Despite Friday’s 73-69 road loss to Western Branch High School, she had 27 points.
- Cydney Nichols, junior for King’s Fork High School basketball: She recovered from a slow start to the year in a big way this week. She helped the Lady Bulldogs beat visiting Western Branch High School 67-64 on Tuesday by contributing 24 points and six steals. On Friday, she helped her team improve to 5-0 this season by scoring 23 points in a 76-43 victory over host Lakeland High School.
- Deonta Knight, senior for Lakeland High School basketball: He joined the elite club of Cavaliers to have scored 1,000 points in his career with his 24-point game in a 79-73 victory over host Deep Creek High School on Thursday. In that same game, he also had 22 rebounds, six blocks and five assists. In Friday’s 57-47 road win against King’s Fork High School, he had 23 points, 15 boards, four assists and two steals.
