Q.: I’m thinking about starting a business with a close friend. Do friendship and business mix?

A.: Starting a business, a new venture, is exciting! I congratulate you on wanting to follow your dreams. I personally love seeing one idea from one person grow into something great.

It sounds like you are already having doubts about going into business with your friend. I am not sure you understand what is causing the doubt. Last time, I talked about the relevance of personal backgrounds to your decision. Today, let’s talk about how different business talents will matter to your plans.

You may be concerned more with the bottom line and how you will make money. Your friend may be more concerned with marketing and getting the word out about the new business. Both roles are important and will add to the success of the business.

From here, learn to respect what each person will bring to the table, as well as individuals you will work with in the future. Just like it takes a team to build a house, learn to value what each person has to offer and trust that you all have the same goal — success of the business.

It is important that the two of you talk about your fears, concerns, and create a business plan together that will cover roles, responsibilities and other important details for your business.

Best wishes to you both.
