Following are this week’s nominees for the Duke Automotive-Suffolk News-Herald Player of the Week:

  • Victoria Twisdale, junior for Suffolk Christian Academy basketball: She had a breakout performance in the Lady Knights’ season opener on Thursday, leading her team to a 49-22 home victory over Alliance Christian Academy. Already a standout on the soccer field, she showed skill on the hardwood by contributing 20 points and 13 rebounds on Thursday.
  • Daniel Griffith, senior for Nansemond-Suffolk Academy football: His performance on defense and offense helped lead the Saints to a 38-18 state championship victory on Friday night against host Atlantic Shores Christian School. Defensively, he led the Saints with 11 tackles, including three for a loss, and three sacks. Offensively, he connected with senior Noah Serianni for a 28-yard touchdown pass.
  • John Spearman, senior for King’s Fork High School football: He played a significant role in making the No. 4 Bulldogs look like the favorite against No. 1 and still undefeated Lake Taylor High School for much of Friday’s 4A East regional quarterfinal. He recorded a 93-yard touchdown reception and gave his team a 26-7 lead after blocking a punt and recovering it for a score. He finished with two catches for 142 yards.
