Robert Lewis Alwood

Robert Lewis Alwood, 93, passed away on Oct. 30, 2015. He was born in Staunton to the late Hubert and Fannie Alwood. Robert was a member of the University of Virginia Alumni Association and the Jefferson Society along with being a past president and lieutenant governor for the Suffolk Kiwanis Club. He was also a member of Suffolk Presbyterian Church serving as a past elder and deacon. Robert was a veteran of the U.S. Army 9th infantry, serving in Germany during World War II. Robert retired from VDOT in 1982 as a district material engineer after 30 years. One of his biggest accomplishments with VDOT was assisting in building today’s interstate system in Virginia. Along with his parents, Robert is predeceased by daughter, Sarah Williams, two sisters and three brothers.

Left to cherish his memory are his loving wife, Frances Alwood; sons, Robert Jackson Alwood (Claudia), of New Port Richey, Fla., David Earl Alwood (Nancy), of Richmond; daughter, Jennie Zehmer, of Durham, N.C.; brother, Richard D. Alwood, of Danville; 10 grandchildren, four great-granddaughters and one on the way.

A memorial service will be held Wednesday, Nov. 11, 2015, at 3 p.m. at Suffolk Presbyterian Church, 410 N. Broad St., Suffolk, with the Rev. Libby Rollins officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to The Lupus Foundation of America, 281 Independence Blvd No. 434, Virginia Beach, VA 23462 or a charity of one’s choice. R.W. Baker & Co.
