Player of the Week nominees

Following are this week’s nominees for the Duke Automotive-Suffolk News-Herald Player of the Week:

Raekwon Sallywhite, senior for Lakeland High School cross country: He was the lone Cavalier who qualified to compete in the Group 3A state championships with his performance in the Region 3A East championships on Tuesday at Culpeper High School. Navigating a difficult course featuring inclines both long and steep, he placed 38th out of 81 male runners, finishing with an 18:38.2 time in the 5,000 meters.

Chandler Bergeron, junior for Nansemond-Suffolk Academy cross country: She took second place out of 64 runners in the girls’ 5,000-meter run that was part of the Tidewater Conference of Independent Schools championships on Friday at a muddy and hot Bells Mill Park in Chesapeake. Her time of 20:22.88 helped the Lady Saints earn third place out of six teams competing.

Casey Williams, junior for Nansemond River High School cross country: She was the lone Warrior who qualified to compete in the Group 5A state championships with her performance in the Region 5A South championships on Wednesday at Bells Mill Park in Chesapeake. She placed 38th in a field of 134 female runners as she finished with a time of 21:34.49 in the 5,000-meter run.
