The Chesapeake Square Mall will hold a touch-a-truck event this Saturday as a gift to the community.

While many of these truck events cost money, this one is free, said Amber Caudell, a spokeswoman for the mall located at 4200 Portsmouth Blvd. in Chesapeake.

“We want to give back to the community,” she said.

The mall has hosted a similar event in the past, Caudell said. This year, however, the team has worked together with Chick-fil-A to make it “bigger and better,” she said.

“It usually draws a pretty big crowd,” Caudell said of the Touch-a-Truck events held in the area. Locals can sign up to include their own vehicles in the event.

From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., children will get the chance to touch, tour, honk and learn about the different vehicles in the mall parking lot, Caudell said. Some of the vehicles that will be on display include police cars, ambulances, fire trucks, limousines, tractors, classic cars, RVs and more.

Along with the hands-on learning experience for children, guests can check out the small selection of vendors hosting tables at the event, or buy some Chick-fil-A. The restaurant will also offer face painting and free giveaways at their table, and children can enjoy craft-making at the Kidgits table, Caudell said.

“We are a community mall,” Caudell said of Chesapeake Square’s emphasis on children’s activities. Each month, the mall staff hosts a different event and next month, there will actually be three, including the third Street Shopping Night, Kidgits’ “Malloween” and a trunk-or-treat, Caudell said.

Rumors about the mall closing, Caudell said, are not true. In fact, Funville Playground and Cafe, an indoor play area, opened in February, and they are expecting some other new businesses to open soon.
