The Isle of Wight Academy football team’s offense was too much for host Kenston Forest School as the Chargers rolled to a 47-6 win Friday night against the Kavaliers in a Virginia Commonwealth Conference matchup.

Nine different IWA runners carried the ball for a total of 192 yards. Kenston managed only 63 yards rushing on the night.

The Chargers were led by sophomore Colton Heard, a second-half replacement player who rushed for 65 yards on eight carries. Junior Donald King added 13 rushing yards, a seemingly modest total until the eye catches his two rushing touchdowns, one for five yards and the other for three. He also had a 55-yard punt return for a score.

Senior Alec Edwards ran for 51 yards on five carries, scoring twice.

The disparate offensive stats are due to the Chargers’ positive field position most of the night. They began their eight possessions with an average field position on the Kavalier 30-yard line.

Kenston’s punt game also was off, with three attempts for an average of 13 yards.

The Kavaliers’ third-quarter drive, featuring a 71-yard pass play leading to a two-yard touchdown run by senior Ira Woodley, was by far their deepest incursion into IWA territory. Putting aside the touchdown, the Kavaliers’ other nine possessions ended, on average, on their 32-yard line.

Isle of Wight senior Bryce Casey was a perfect two-for-two passing, hitting senior Curtis Waters for 20 yards and senior Chad McCann for 25 yards, the latter resulting in the game’s final touchdown.

Junior Zach Hinson led IWA’s defense with 12 tackles; Alec Edwards had 10 from his linebacker position.

IWA (2-1, 1-0 in the VCC) returns to action Friday night against Brunswick Academy at 7 p.m. at Hooper Field. Two weeks ago, Brunswick dealt Kenston (0-2) its first loss of the season in a high-scoring game, 46-42.
