More than 300 volunteers for Suffolk Meals on Wheels got special recognition at a volunteer dinner on Tuesday evening at Bethlehem Christian Church.

One of the youngest volunteers, however, was called out for extra attention.

Jean-Mathias “J.M.” Bilé started volunteering for the organization this summer and quickly racked up well in excess of the 50 hours of community service he’s required to have to graduate high school.

“I might still come back, just for fun,” he said at Tuesday’s dinner.

About 160 volunteers were in attendance, Executive Director Roseland Worrell said. About 50 were recognized for milestones of service with the organization — one, five, 10 or 15 years, though many have served for longer.

John Monroe estimated he’s been volunteering for 16 or 17 years.

“It has been a joy,” he said. “Many of (the recipients) may not see anyone else but the person who brings their Meals on Wheels. It uplifts me, and I know it does for others.”

Meals are cooked and packed at Sentara Obici Hospital and delivered to recipients in the Suffolk and Isle of Wight area at lunchtime Monday through Friday. Some clients pay the full cost of their meals, and Seniors Services provides subsidies for some clients who meet eligibility requirements.

Because the organization gets no government funding, it relies heavily on volunteers, Worrell said.

“It wouldn’t be possible without the volunteers,” she said.

As a thank-you, each volunteer in attendance got to take home a potted chrysanthemum.
