Starr Motors celebrated 25 years of selling new Chrysler automobiles at a ceremony last week with Chrysler executives.

“We’re very grateful to our mom and dad, Charles and Nell White,” said Clay White, speaking for himself and his brother, Eddie, who own the dealership. Their parents started the business in 1962 with one trailer to haul used cars.

It had grown a long way already when in 1990 it started selling new Chrysler cars. But that was a long time ago — illustrated by Michael Walter, an area sales manager for Chrysler, who said during last week’s ceremony that the hit song in 1990 was Vanilla Ice’s “Ice, Ice, Baby.”

In its 53rd year in business, the dealership now has about 68 employees and is a leader among Chrysler dealerships in the Tidewater area. It has 32 percent of the market share in Suffolk, Walter reported to employees last week. Clay White is currently selling 147 percent of his minimum requirement, and his minimum is the highest in the entire district, Walter said.

The dealership had sold 281 vehicles so far in 2015 as of last week, Walter said.

During the luncheon for employees in the showroom, Walter pepped up the workers with descriptions of Chrysler’s new line of vehicles, many of which elicited excitement from the crowd.

A plug-in hybrid electric and a new Town and Country are among the Chrysler offerings, Walter said. A new Dart RT and a Challenger Cuda convertible will be in the Dodge line, and production on Hellcat engines is being doubled.

Jeep, which celebrates its 75th anniversary, will release camo-green Wranglers, Renegades, Cherokees and Grand Cherokees, Walter said, along with a new compact SUV that has yet to be named.

The Chrysler officials in attendance presented a plaque to the dealership for 25 years of hard work.

“My wish would be in another 25 years, we stand up here and give you a 50-year plaque,” said James Kinsey of Chrysler.

Ed White, the third generation of the business, said it has succeeded because it treats every customer like a member of the family.

“It means a lot to us to be involved in a company that has such a presence in the community, that’s going to treat every customer like a member of our family,” he said.
