To the editor:
With the announcement from President Obama about America’s Clean Power Plan, we as a nation are taking one huge leap forward when it comes to combating climate change.
We are role models for other countries to follow, but this will allow the next generations to grow up with even better experiences than we did. This plan will benefit everyone, but most importantly it will benefit our children.
President Obama stated in his speech that he wants his grandchildren “to be able to swim and climb mountains and be able to see glaciers on the other side.”
By cutting carbon pollution from power plants by as much as 32 percent, the plan will ensure his grandchildren will be able to do that. It will also mean 90,000 fewer asthma attacks and 1,700 fewer hospital visits by 2030, allowing our children to able to enjoy the life they have always dreamed of.
This is particularly important in Virginia, as our capital, Richmond, is the No. 1 asthmatic capital in the country again in 2014.
Thank you President Obama for valuing the health of our children and setting the bar for other countries to follow.
