Police suspend water search for DUI suspect

UPDATED 1 p.m.: Suffolk police have suspended the water search for the two males who fled the vehicle, city spokeswoman Diana Klink said. Neither subject has been located.
Earlier: The Suffolk Police Department is currently searching for a suspected drunken driver after he fled into the waters of the James River after crashing his vehicle earlier this morning, according to a city press release.
Emergency Communications received the call at 1:34 a.m. after an officer initiated a traffic stop for a suspected drunken driver. The driver of the vehicle, a Dodge pickup, refused to stop and continued traveling north on Respass Beach Road. The vehicle crashed in the 5000 block of Bay Circle after driving through a lawn and striking a lawn ornament and power guy wire, according to the release.
Both occupants, adult white males, fled the vehicle on foot, according to the release. The driver was last seen walking in the water of the James River. The passenger of the vehicle has also not been located.
The Coast Guard was notified to assist in the search along with the Suffolk Police Department’s marine unit.
