Summer. For school-aged children, it’s a time to take a break from the daily grind of classroom lectures and nightly homework. For most students, it’s also a time to look forward to the new experiences they will enjoy as a result of their grade-level promotions.

Those same things are true for many of the faculty members in Suffolk’s schools. Even those who are involved in the city’s revamped summer school program can enjoy a more relaxed pace, along with a few weeks of vacation. And for some faculty members in Suffolk’s public school system, this summer break affords them an opportunity to look forward to a whole new set of challenges next year.

The school system has announced a bevy of promotions and re-assignments for the coming year, and it’s likely that all of those affected — the staff members, the students and the parents — are curious about what the changes will mean.

Among the conclusions they’re likely to reach is this one: Suffolk has many excellent, committed and caring educators who have devoted their lives to providing the best free education that can be had within the constraints of tight budgets, disengaged parents and occasionally disinterested students. They appreciate the challenges and enjoy the opportunities to change young lives.

Congratulations to those teachers and administrators who have been given even greater responsibilities for the coming school year. Their hard work and dedication have earned them the positions they’ll be taking, and we look forward to seeing the fruits their labors will produce.
