Ella Mabel Brumfield Tucker, 95, passed away peacefully at home in Chuckatuck on Wednesday, July 15, 2015, surrounded by her daughter and granddaughters. She was born on Oct. 1, 1919, to Benjamin Franklin and Josie Carr Brumfield on the family tobacco farm in Pittsylvania County. Her mother died when Mabel was 2, leaving grandmother Julia Brumfield and stepmother Mary Brumfield to help raise her.

Her husband, Vernon L. Tucker; a son, Ben L. Tucker; and a granddaughter, Elizabeth Williams Shook, preceded Mrs. Tucker in death. Three of her four siblings, brothers Henry Brumfield and Benjamin F. “Pat” Brumfield and a sister, Juliet Edmonia “Brummy” Brumfield Owens, also preceded her in death.

She is survived by her daughter, Lana Jo Tucker Williams; two granddaughters, Allison T. Williams and Susan L. Williams; her daughter-in-law, Linda J. Tucker, of Marietta, Ga.; and her brother, Grayson E. Brumfield, of Arvada, Colo. She is survived by two great-grandchildren, Sara E. Shook and Isaac R. Shook, who affectionately called her Pink Grammy, and their father, Trace R. Shook, of Crewe.

She is also survived by several special friends, including Patricia McConnell, of Suffolk; Lynne Johnson, of Suffolk; Victor L. Williams, of Ahoskie, N.C.; Mark Trenchard, of Marietta, Ga.; and many nieces, nephews and cousins from the Brumfield and Tucker families.

It was only when Mrs. Tucker’s children were in high school and college that she pursued her childhood dream of becoming a nurse. She graduated as a licensed practical nurse from the Louise Obici School of Nursing in 1962 and spent nearly 15 years working at Louise Obici Memorial Hospital.

Since moving to Chuckatuck in the late 1940s, Mrs. Tucker embraced the small, rural community where she made her home. She quickly became an active member of Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church, where her family continues to worship today. She will be remembered for her deep love of family, especially her three grandchildren; her fondness for baking and sharing hot yeast rolls; her quiet, unassuming demeanor; and rich sense of humor.

Mrs. Tucker took great pride and satisfaction in knowing that her nephews and their families are restoring and once again using Aspen Grove, her family’s home place in Renan. She left this world content, knowing that future generations of the Brumfield family will experience the values and traditions of her beloved home place.

A visitation will be held from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Friday, July 17, 2015, at Sturtevant Funeral Home, Bennetts Creek Chapel, 2690 Bridge Road, Suffolk. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, July 18, 2015, at Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church, 220 Kings Highway, Suffolk.
