Two people were sent to the hospital after a head-on collision on the Mills E. Godwin Bridge on Bridge Road early Saturday morning.

The accident occurred at 4:25 a.m. and involved a Toyota Camry and Dodge Charter. Both male drivers had to be extricated from their vehicles, according to a city press release.

Suffolk Fire and Rescue crews were assisted by the Chuckatuck Volunteer Fire Department during the extrications. The drivers were taken by ground ambulance to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital with serious injuries.

The bridge was closed while crews removed the vehicles and debris from the roadway. The cause remains under investigation.
