Lizzie Beatrice Baker-Goodman

On Saturday, June 20, 2015, at 3:42 p.m., Lizzie Beatrice Baker-Goodman, 76, of Whaleyville, went home to be with the Lord after a brief illness at Nansemond Pointe. She was the daughter of the late Kator Rodgers and Dollie Jordan Wright.

She was predeceased by her husbands, Willie T. Baker Jr. and Elder Linwood Goodman; four daughters, Joyce Harris, Trina Artis, Elois Reid and Margaret Jones; three sons, James, Franklin and Linwood Goodman Jr.; and two sisters, Juanita Copeland and Celestine Waters.

Lizzie was born in Nansemond County on May 10, 1939 and was educated by Nansemond County Schools. She worked as a cook at Simpson’s Restaurant in Suffolk for several years. She married Elder Linwood Goodman, a pastor, on Feb. 20, 1971. She gained nine children from that union, which made them have a wonderful family of 16 children.

During her early years, Lizzie, was a member of Healing Chapel Baptist Church. After marrying Elder Linwood Goodman, she and her children joined New Jerusalem COGIC, where she served as a member of the senior choir, Mothers Board, the Adult Sunday School Class and First Lady. She also served as church mother of Faith, Hope and Love Ministries.

She leaves to cherish her memory, one sister, Edith Sessoms, of Portsmouth; three sons: Willie D. Baker (Sandra), of Suffolk, Otis Goodman, of Upper Marlboro, Md., and Cleophus Goodman (Linda), of Waterbury, Conn.; six daughters, Dollie B. Ricks (Clarence), of Newport News, Anita Baker, Mildred B. Knight (Lewis), Mary B. Warren (Robert), Lula G. Wiggins, all of Suffolk, Ethel G. Goodman, of Mitchellville, Md.; son-in-law, Darryl A. Artis; three sisters-in-law, Lavinia Baker, Evelyn Haskins, Mildred Robinson; one brother-in-law, Isaiah Baker, of Suffolk; three aunts, Lealer Manley, Molly Jordan and Sylvia Battle; two uncles, David and Joseph Jordan (Peggy); 45 grandchildren, host of great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

A visitation will take place from noon to 6 p.m., and a wake service will take place from 6 to 7 p.m. on Friday, June 26, 2015, at the funeral home. The family will assemble at the home of Dr. Lewis and Mildred Knight, 1306 Lawson Circle, Suffolk, VA 23434, at all other times and the procession to the church. A celebration of her life will be held at noon on Saturday, June 27, 2015, at New Mount Joy Food for Living Ministries, 307 County St., officiated by Bishop Viola Parker and Pastor Robert Lee Warren Jr., eulogist. She will be laid to rest at Carver Memorial Cemetery. Professional services are entrusted to T.E. Cooke-Overton Funeral Home Inc.
