Emergency workers rescued a three-legged dog near an accident scene this morning after the pup, named “Sparky,” panicked after the crash and ran from the vehicle.

The crash happened at 7:17 a.m. on Route 58 eastbound, between the weigh scales and the Chesapeake city line. Preliminary investigation found the Chevrolet Suburban ran off the road to the left, struck the guardrail and came to rest in the left westbound lane.

Sparky escaped the vehicle, and the driver refused medical treatment until his dog could be located, according to a city press release. They found the dog about a half-mile west of the scene and reunited him with his owner.
