NR hoops seniors take different paths

Only one of the four seniors from the 2014-15 Nansemond River High School boys’ basketball team plans to pursue hoops at the next level, but all have chosen directions with promise.
“Our tradition of our kids – in general – moving on continues,” Warriors coach Ed Young said.
Matt Allmond, who was a standout at Nansemond River this past season, will play basketball for Tidewater Community College and has hopes to continue on the hardwood at a four-year school in the future.
“Allmond is just beginning to understand how good he can be as a basketball player if he puts in the time to be better than average, and (he) needs to apply himself to his potential in the classroom,” Young stated.
The coach said Allmond’s two years at TCC should help him develop his skills both academically and on the court.
Paul Hall Jr. will be going to Old Dominion University to pursue a degree in accounting.
With his good grades, “he got some academic money to help him out,” Young said. “He knew he probably wouldn’t play on the next level,” and he did not want to pass up the academic opportunity ODU was presenting him with for a chance at limited playing time at a lesser academic institution.
“This shows his maturity and why he will be successful after college, too,” Young stated. “In fact, I told (him) to hurry and get good so he can help me make big money and then manage it for me!”
Aaron Parker and Keion Roberts will be enlisting in the United States Air Force.
“They decided to take the military approach, kind of find out what they really want to get involved with,” Young said.
He noted both of them had avenues to college opportunities, but they are not totally sure where their interest lies in the adult world.
“Both exhibit high energy and engaging personalities that alone will allow them to get in and fit in just about anywhere their travels will take them,” Young stated.
“We are proud of all four kids and look forward to following their success as we do with countless many that have moved on before them.”
