Ryan Lemonte Askew, a Nansemond River High School senior, was the recipient of the $2,000 Col. Fred V. Cherry Scholarship. The scholarship was presented at the Nansemond River Senior Awards Program on May 20.
The Col. Cherry Scholarship was established to honor Cherry, a Suffolk native and a Vietnam veteran who was captured and held as a prisoner of war.
The committee was impressed with Askew’s academic and co-curricular activities. He participated in the Project Lead the Way Engineering Magnet Program and maintained a 3.57 GPA. Askew was a Beta Club member and worked as library aide.
Askew will attend Old Dominion University next year to pursue a career in civil engineering. The $2,000 scholarship will be sent directly to the university.
