Some Suffolk voters will have the chance to choose the Republican candidate for Virginia’s 14th Senate district today.
The primary competition includes incumbent John A. Cosgrove Jr. and challenger William “Bill” Haley.
Cosgrove has been a member of the Senate since 2013 and was a member of the House of Delegates from 2002 until his Senate election.
Haley has challenged Cosgrove before, in the 2013 “firehouse primary” to choose a candidate for a special election after state Sen. Harry Blevins retired. He and his wife have three daughters and a son-in-law.
Only the following Suffolk precincts are in the 14th district: White Marsh, Whaleyville, Kilby’s Mill, Lake Cohoon, Elephant’s Fork/Westhaven, Airport, Pittmantown, Holland and Lakeside.
White Marsh, Lake Cohoon and Elephant’s Fork/Westhaven are split between the 14th and 18th districts. If you live in one of these precincts, check your voter identification card or call 514-7750 to find out which district you are in.
In addition to those parts of Suffolk, the 14th district also includes parts of Franklin, Isle of Wight County, Chesapeake, Portsmouth, Southampton County and Virginia Beach.
The polls are open from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. Call 514-7750 for more information.
