A Suffolk woman is dead after a shooting late Sunday night in the 1000 block of Cogic Square.
Alissa Johnson, 25, of the 200 block of Lewis Avenue in Suffolk, was dead when officers arrived on scene Sunday, according to city spokeswoman Debbie George.
Police were called to the scene just before midnight on a report of shots fired, George said. The first officer arrived within a minute of the call to find a large crowd and Johnson’s body on the sidewalk.
While officers were conducting their investigation, they learned that a 25-year-old male had walked into the emergency room at Sentara Obici Hospital with a gunshot wound. He claimed his injury happened in another location, but police soon learned he also had been shot in the 1000 block of Cogic Square, George said.
The man was treated and released, she added.
Police say a black male wearing dark clothing emerged from a fenced area toward the rear of the apartment buildings and started shooting, “approximately five or six shots,” George said. A third bullet struck a vehicle.
The man fled back toward the fenced area, George said.
Neighbors in the area Monday were reluctant to give their names, but they had plenty to say about what happened.
One woman said she was scared for her children, who are ages 12, 13 and 15.
“It really bothers me,” she said. “That girl got shot for no reason.”
Another woman said she was in the bathroom when she heard six or seven shots.
One of her neighbors added, “I heard too d— many to count.”
“She was just an innocent bystander,” she said.
