Rain affected the turnout for this year’s recent Howard Mast Tennis Day, but Janice Henderson of Suffolk Parks and Recreation estimated about 75 people still came out to participate in the fifth annual edition of the event.

“It went really well, even with the rain,” she said, noting a slight drizzle started around 9:30 a.m., but then stopped and held off until 2 p.m. when the event was mostly concluded.

Adult tennis players were afforded the opportunity to play in a tournament during the event, and there were also tennis skill drill stations where participants could perform and earn points to receive a trophy.

Dr. Emogene Vaughn, a professor at Norfolk State University, won the King of the Courts trophy because she earned the most points on the day — 48. All of her points came as a result of her four victories during the tournament.

Tying for the second-most points were Ira Steingold and last year’s overall winner, Nick Williams.

The United States Tennis Association provided gifts to be given away as prizes, including T-shirts and an oversized racket and ball.

“We even had a fashion show,” Henderson said, noting it featured players from the Junior Tennis Program, as well as adults.

Aside from Suffolk, participants in Howard Mast Tennis Day came from Chesapeake, Franklin, Windsor, Virginia Beach, Norfolk and Richmond.
