A Suffolk sheriff’s deputy was injured Thursday afternoon as he attempted to provide assistance at a single-vehicle accident.

The crash happened at 5:25 p.m. on Carolina Road at the Southwest Suffolk Bypass on-ramp. A four-door Nissan left the roadway and came to rest on the embankment, according to a city press release.

The deputy was injured when the vehicle rolled, striking him as he attempted to assist the victim.

Witness Denise Perry said she and her husband pulled over to the side of the road when she saw the car on the hill. They ran toward the car and realized they knew the deputy.

“I was getting ready to go up the hill, and (someone) started screaming (that) the car was going backwards,” she said. “The car rolled right over (the deputy). I don’t know whether he was injured.”

The deputy was airlifted to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital for treatment of injuries not believed to be life-threatening.

The female driver and her infant passenger were taken to Sentara Obici Hospital with injuries not believed to be life-threatening.

The cause of the accident remains under investigation, according to the press release.
