The 2014-15 season for Lakeland High School’s boys’ basketball team came to an end Monday in a 72-66 loss to No.-1 Heritage High School in the semifinals of the Ironclad Conference tournament at King’s Fork High School.

“I felt that from the Denbigh (High School) game that we had a nice flow, a nice rhythm,” Wright said, referring to the No. 4 Cavaliers’ quarterfinal win on Feb. 13 before the inclement weather delays began. “Naturally, the break kind of hindered that. We were hoping to peak like we did last year.”

Lakeland’s late-season run last year culminated in an Ironclad Conference tournament championship.

This year, a failure to produce good free throw shooting and proper defensive positioning on Monday sunk the Cavaliers.

Despite being out for much of the game due to foul trouble, junior forward Deonta Knight still managed to lead Lakeland, producing 15 points and nine rebounds. Senior forward Larry Everett added 12 points and six boards.

Lakeland finished the year with an overall record of 12-12, going 5-5 during the regular season in the conference.

Wright called it “a relevant season, one that we will continue to build upon.”

The Cavaliers move to the Group 3A classification next season and Conference 27, which will feature schools like Booker T. Washington, I.C. Norcom, Phoebus and Tabb.
