Don’t forget to drip

Twenty-five city water customers were impacted Thursday when the arctic front caused two water mains to rupture, according to the city of Suffolk.
Customers in the 300 block of Spruce Street and the 900 block of East Riverview Drive were expected to be disconnected for four to five hours for repairs.
“Staff believe it’s somewhat related to the weather,” said Al Moor, director of public utilities. “When you have variant temperatures going through the pipes — sudden changes — the pipes contract or expand. What you have here is a circumferential split, and that gives an indication it was temperature.”
Moor said two 6-inch cast iron pipes would be fixed either with a sleeve or repair band.
He reiterated the city’s advice to residents to drip faucets, citing about 100 callouts since Saturday to cut the water supply to properties at the street so burst private lines could be repaired.
“We remind residential customers to drip, especially over the next couple of nights,” he said Thursday.
It’s especially important with faucets served by exposed pipes, such as at kitchen sinks or those overlooking windows, city spokeswoman Diana Klink added. Leaving kitchen and bathroom cabinet doors open can allow warmer air to circulate, but make sure harmful chemicals are out of the reach of children.
Other pipe-protection tips include disconnecting hoses from outdoor spigots, because freezing continues back into the spigot and pipes; keeping garage doors closed if water supply lines would be exposed; and temporarily suspending lower thermostat settings during the day.
