Player of the Week nominees

Following are this week’s nominees for the Duke Automotive-Suffolk News-Herald Player of the Week:

  • Matt Allmond, senior for Nansemond River High School basketball: He helped his team go 2-0 at the McBee Holiday Tournament in South Carolina. He finished with 22 points in a 60-50 win in Tuesday’s championship game against host McBee High School. He also contributed 20 points on 8-of-12 shooting, with 10 rebounds and three blocks in Monday’s 61-51 win against Central High School of Pageland, S.C.
  • Harper Birdsong, junior for Nansemond-Suffolk Academy basketball: She averaged around 20 points a game while playing every minute of every game to fuel a 2-1 Lady Saints record in the Bronze Division of the 2014 Boo Williams Christmas Classic in Hampton. In Monday’s 54-34 Lady Saints win over Gar-Field Senior High School, she scored a game-high 25 points, adding six rebounds and three assists.
  • Kenya Latham, senior Lakeland High School basketball: He showed that the Norfolk Scope Arena stage was not too big for him. Though the Cavaliers finished with a 1-2 record, including a narrow overtime loss, he shined particularly on Monday against Tallwood High School. Despite the 67-58 loss, he repeatedly kept his team in it, finishing with 20 points, tied for the game-high, to go with five assists and five boards.
